Angle of Photography lighting are the same, whether you shoot with natural or artificial light. The difference is only when you move your camera or subjects. The light will always be there.

As beginners in photography, the big obstacle to shoot is lighting. The new photographers might make several mistakes when it comes to photography lighting. Thus, to give you an impression of food photography, mind your angles, when you have to use one.

Angles of Food Photography Lighting 1 : Lighting from the Side of Subjects

The side lighting is reliable. If you are new photographers or you’re just learning photography, try to have side lighting. What you have to do is take photos as much as possible to determine the exact position desired. Once you find the comfort zone, try to experiment with the photography lighting angles.

Side angle is the most used angle by the photographers. The reason why they used it often is because this angle makes your food look good. If you want to have an airy and light photo, you can try to have this side lighting as a starting point. The light will gently kiss the food, which gives you dramatic shadows.

One tip to do side lighting is by putting it on the left side of subjects. It is more comfortable for your eyes to follow. Have this as a consideration when taking photos.

Angles of Food Photography Lighting 2 : Back Lighting

Back lighting is good for detail, dramatic highlights, and a romantic look. It might be a more challenging way, but you will see that magic happens. In this backlighting way, you have to adjust the balance of exposure while making the front stay in darkness and the back of subjects don’t blow out your shot.

To hide the light from the back, use reflectors to bounce the light to the front of the subject. Or you can also position your backlight source higher; this is the best way to make it out of view.

The theory is not that hard. This backside lighting will be great. If you love to observe photography lighting, observe where the shadow is falling when having these lighting angles.

Back/Side Lighting

When using this way, your lighting source must be 135° from your camera. These two positions will give the best shots from both sides and the back of photography lighting.

From this angle, you will have spectacular highlights, but at the same time, you have to balance the exposure on your photos. Using the back and side lighting will prevent other light sources that appeared in your shoot

In general, these are the most effective photography lighting angles to create beautiful photos. Avoid having lighting from above and from the front.
